Hasegawa F-104S Starfighter, 1/48
This small review is concentrated on the differences between the F-104G and the F-104S models only. Please read the F-104G/J review for information on fit of parts, quality of mouldings etc.
Releasing the F-104S as a separate kit seams logical considering the number of different parts required for the S model. The external differences between the G model and the S model are:
- Wider main air intakes with different panel lines on the S model,
- All S models have the Martin Baker Mk. 7Q ejection seat,
- Two small ventral fins, one on either side of the main ventral fin on the S model,
- The leading edge of the main ventral fin was altered of the S model,
- M61 canon was deleted and the opening for the muzzle was covered (S model),
- The S model has two additional wing pylons and different under-belly missile lauchers.
- Slightly different exhaust petals on the F-104S.
Contrary to some reports the aft fuselage of the F-104S is not wider than that of any other F-104 version.
So, has all this been catered for by Hasegawa? Unfortunately not.
This is what has been changed in the kit:
- The Lockheed C-2 ejection seat has been deleted (no problem as it would have to be consigned to the spares box),
- Two new small ventral fins have been added,
- A number of parts have been marked as ‘not for use’.
This all boils down to the fact that the main ventral fin has not been changed, nor have the wider main air intakes been added (you are simply told to fill a few panel lines and new ones are represented by a decal for either side of the intake). Also, the fact that the gun muzzle has to be covered is mentioned nowhere, and the appropriate pylons and missile launchers are not included.
The kit includes decals for three aircraft in the old dark green, dark grey and aluminium finish. The three options are.
5-37 (MM6934) from 23° Gruppo, 5° Stormo,
36-0 (MM6774) from 12° Gruppo, 36° Stormo,
9-31 (MM6735) from 10° Gruppo, 9° Stormo.
Conclusion: Unfortunately this kit cannot be built into an F-104S straight from the box. Making a correct F-104S would require the Cutting Edge F-104S conversion kit. However, it still builds into a very nice F-104G.
